Dresser Consolidated raises industry-wide awareness of the risks of using cheap, non-authorized OEM parts
Dresser Consolidated® is the leading pressure and gas safety valve manufacturer with trusted expertise to provide and service reliable flow safety systems in critical applications around the world. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, Dresser Consolidated, a business of Dresser, Inc., has been serving the industry since 1852.
Challenge: Dresser Consolidated wanted an effective way to raise awareness of the risks associated with the prevailing practice of using cheap, non-authorized OEM or copied parts in pressure relief valves (PRVs). A failure in one of these PRVs could lead to the disastrous loss of life and property because they are the critical equipment that form the backbone of pressure relief management systems—the last line of defense.
Solution: Tiecas researched this problem that was widespread and worldwide. We developed a series of flyers with high-impact images that characterized the big gamble taken by using cheap, non-authorized OEM parts. Wrote new copy in consultation with the Director of Marketing and the Sr. Product Manager, Aftermarket. Short bulleted text was used to describe the risks and highlighted the key benefits of the solution provided by Dresser Consolidated.
Another version was created specifically for the Asian market where gambling would have been a sensitive cultural issue. To reinforce the message, a third flyer was produced after the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors (NBIC) published its latest code interpretation (04-08) on the use of Replacement Parts.
Results: The flyers successfully raised awareness of the problem and put the spotlight on the solution offered by our client. Here is a direct quote received by Dresser Consolidated from a senior manager at a large competitor.
“You have taken the lead and published a flyer addressing this issue. We have just started the process to do something similar…the Industry Standards and Codes were developed over a long period of time by qualified engineers to increase safety in the industry as a total, now it appears that these rules are being modified to suit the wants of a niche industry, some times even that of a specific company. This is dangerous and we have a moral and civic obligation to stop it.”
