Social Media Marketing — Technology has Changed the Ways You Communicate Your Marketing Message

A March 2007 Global Survey done by McKinsey & Company, titled “How businesses are using Web 2.0” shows the rising popularity in the use of online tools among business marketers around the world. According to the survey, “Executives say they are using Web 2.0 technologies to communicate with customers and business partners and to encourage collaboration inside the company.”

Social media or Web 2.0 technologies can provide a huge boost to your online business marketing strategy. However, it’s important to know what exactly it is you’re trying to achieve before you get started.

Make a plan to help you measure and track your success. It is not possible to tweak the myriad of social methods available if you don’t know what is working for you.

Social media marketing can help your marketing in a variety of ways. You must decide your goals and prioritize them. Don’t fall into the trap of saying all of the above otherwise you risk seeing very little results for all your efforts.

Some of the common goals of social media marketing are:

  • Drive traffic to your site
  • Generate referrals and sales
  • Communicate with both current and prospective clients
  • Build business and personal relationships

No matter what your goals are, social media marketing will make it easier to accomplish.

Keep in mind that just accumulating connections through social media outlets is not going to do much for the success of your business. Having thousands of “followers” or “friends” in various social media platforms may feel nice but unless you form meaningful relationships with them, it is just idle chatter that’s a huge drain on your time.

You want to create a plan for not only obtaining these followers, but also converting them into paying customers.

However, in social media marketing you need to walk a fine line between blatant self-promotion and being an active participant in the community. You are sure to quickly lose your “fan following” if all you do is send out one sales pitch after another. Try to find your own voice that’s a happy medium between marketing and providing useful information.

Get started by harnessing the power of social media. Done right, social media can enhance user experience, create meaningful conversations, and boost the perception of your brand. Need help making sense of social media marketing?
